On this day in 1980, Boston Celtics general manager Red Auerbach pulled off one of the biggest trades in NBA history that helped solidify his place among the greatest executives of all-time.
Auerbach and the Celtics acquired future Hall of Famer Robert Parish and a first-round pick in the 1980 NBA Draft that would become Kevin McHale from the Golden State Warriors in exchange for first-round picks Joe Barry Carroll and Rickey Brown.
McHale went onto become a Hall of Famer after spending each of his 13 seasons in the NBA with the Celtics. He was a seven-time NBA All-Star and a three-time champion while he also won the Sixth Man of the Year award twice in his career.
He is regarded as one of the best power forwards of all-time.
Of course, the Celtics, led by Parish, McHale and Larry Bird, won three NBA championships in their first six seasons together and made up perhaps the greatest frontcourt trio in NBA history.
