On this day in 2006, Andrea Bargnani, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors, became the first player ever to foul out of an NBA Summer League game.
Of course, in a typical NBA game, a player is disqualified after six personal fouls. However, in a Summer League game, players have a bit more leeway and are disqualified after 10 fouls. The idea is the 10-foul limit allows players the opportunity to develop and play longer.
So, Bargnani, in just his second Summer League game with the Raptors, recorded 12 points, 10 fouls and two rebounds in 28 minutes of work against the Sacramento Kings. As it turned out, Bargnani struggled with fouling that year, averaging 6.2 over his five-game stretch in Las Vegas.
Bargnani arrived in the NBA fresh off of a strong European career where he was a two-time Italian Cup winner. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team with the Raptors and eventually played 10 seasons before retiring in 2016.
He averaged 14.3 points and 4.6 rebounds in 550 career games.
