Matt Nagy announced that rookie quarterback Justin Fields has been named the team’s starter moving forward, a moment that’s been a long time coming.
Fields received the news Tuesday, where Nagy explained Fields’ reaction was very stoic, similar to when he learned he would get his first NFL start in Week 3 in place of an injured Andy Dalton.
It just so happened that Fields parents were in town visiting. So when Fields got the news that he’d be the permanent starter, his family wanted to go out and celebrate.
Instead, Fields explained that he had a game to prepare for and opted to stay home and watch film with his dog Uno.
“I just told them, ‘Nah, I’m cool,'” Fields told reporters Wednesday.

It’s not really a surprise for Fields, who has been a consummate professional so early in his NFL career.
Fields has earned the opportunity to be the starting quarterback moving forward, and he’s shown in a small sample size that he ultimately gives the team the best chance to win with his skillset.
“He’s done everything to show us that he’s ready for this opportunity,” Nagy told reporters.
While winning games is important, this move to Fields as the permanent starter shows that the focus has shifted to the future rather than the present.
