The Iowa Hawkeyes managed to navigate through an emotional night that saw their starting quarterback, Cade McNamara, go down with an injury.
Though it was a serious wrinkle in the plan, Wisconsin transfer and backup signal-caller Deacon Hill came in and provided just enough to go along with Iowa’s stellar defense and special teams in order to scratch out a 26-16 win over Michigan State.
The Hawkeyes’ win over the Spartans featured an electrifying 70-yard punt return touchdown from Cooper DeJean that put Iowa in front to stay with 3:45 remaining.
After the win to improve Iowa to 4-1 (1-1 Big Ten) on the season, head football coach Kirk Ferentz met with the media to recap his thoughts on the evening.
