‘He was a problem,’ Swinney on Xavier Thomas’ Saturday scrimmage performance

Dabo Swinney broke down Clemson’s Saturday scrimmage.

Dabo Swinney and Clemson held a Saturday scrimmage in Memorial Stadium Saturday to give the upcoming Tigers’ football team some more experience in the stadium.

Reportedly a great day for the Tigers, scrimmages are a great way to prepare the team for the upcoming season. When asked about what his biggest takeaway was, Swinney said it was how competitive things were, but neither the offense nor defense walked away the winner.

“There were some big plays on both sides,” Swinney said. “Kind of a carryover from what I’ve seen in practice each day from just again a competition standpoint. I thought defense really started really well, didn’t finish as well. Offense had a few plays. We get a fumble, we get a pick, didn’t finish a couple drives, but then I thought they finished well at the end of practice. And everything in between, just overall a very competitive day.”

“It wasn’t a day where one side dominated, and usually that’s the case when you come out to these first scrimmages. It’s usually one side kind of wins the day after we’ve been together all day every day for 11 days. So, I thought the guys responded pretty good.”

Competition is exactly what you want from the team heading into the season. Clemson’s defense is expected to be close to elite in 2023, so competition means the offense is playing well, and that’s a good sign.

When asked about who stood out the most, Swinney has one answer.

“It wasn’t a day where one side dominated, and usually that’s the case when you come out to these first scrimmages. It’s usually one side kind of wins the day after we’ve been together all day every day for 11 days. So, I thought the guys responded pretty good.”

A great scrimmage for the Tigers; their next one will be the upcoming Wednesday morning.
