Has Texas A&M’s No. 1 wide receiver emerged?

Cyrus Allen’s 73-yard touchdown against Florida was just the start of what’s to come

Texas A&M’s wide receiver rotation isn’t viewed as an elite unit from a national standpoint, mainly due to the lack of explosive athletes after Evan Stewart transferred to Oregon earlier in the year.

However, head coach Mike Elko’s acquisition of former La Tech wide receiver Cyrus Allen, one of the more versatile receiving options in the transfer portal, has slowly become one of the team’s most dependable players in the passing game for both Aggie quarterbacks in the first two games.

Leading the team with 181 yards and a touchdown off of just ten receptions, there’s no doubt that outside of senior wide receiver Moose Muhammad III, Allen is the A&M’s most explosive down-field threat, showing off his speed in the second half of the Aggies’ 33-20 SEC road win over Florida.

Up 20-7 at the 11-minute mark in the second half, backup quarterback Marcel Reed found Allen on a perfectly run wheel route for a 73-yard bomb, which stands as A&M’s longest play this season.

As Carter noted, Allen disguised his route to trick the safety into watching Reed as he veered to the left. This allowed Allen to become wide open for the score, outrunning the coverage.

Set to host Bowling Green on Saturday, Either Conner Weigman or Marcel Reed will start at quarterback. If it’s Reed, expect Allen to be targeted early and often, especially if the run game continues to excel and opens up the play-action pass.

Texas A&M will host Bowling Green on Saturday, Sept. 21. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and SEC Network+.
