Hard Knocks features Rome Odunze’s impressive NFL Combine interview

Rome Odunze’s NFL combine interview with the New York Giants was a big hit on “Hard Knocks.”

Washington Huskies fans knew that both on and off the field, wide receiver Rome Odunze was going to be one of the biggest hits at the NFL combine. In both areas, Odunze arguably exceeded the high bar that was set for him, and HBO’s “Hard Knocks” gave a behind-the-scenes look at what the combine looked like for the superstar in the interview room.

The show follows the New York Giants offseason, who held the No. 6 overall pick in the NFL draft, and the team was heavily considering selecting Odunze, who eventually fell to the Chicago Bears at No. 9, with their first-round pick.

In a brief segment that Washington media members were all too familiar with, Odunze displayed his maturity and unflappable confidence that helped him etch his name in the record books on Montlake as general manager Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll asked him to sell a room full of top Giants personnel on why they should select him at No. 6.

“I think, you know, other than all my skills on the field I’m a guy who is going to come into the locker room and bring the energy, bring the juice, adhere to a high standard and bring everybody along with me,” Odunze said.. “[I can] enter that room as a leader, as someone who people can look to as an example of how to do things right and how to carry yourself in a way that inspires others.”

The Giants staff also asked Odunze why he would fit in their system all the field since the team was desperately looking to add a No. 1 wide receiver for quarterback Daniel Jones.

“I would say my versatility,” he told the room. “You know, I played inside a lot in my career in some of my early-on days. I’m a blocker. I could get down on the line and get the job done, and I think I played pretty well outside. So you could plug and pull me wherever you want and I’m going to get the job done.”

There’s no such thing as a truly safe bet in the NFL draft, but Odunze’s interview proved why he may be the closest thing to that.
