Clemson football is making a statement in the ACC Championship Game, taking a commanding 24-7 lead over SMU into halftime.
Cade Klubnik delivered a historic performance in the first quarter, becoming the first quarterback in ACC title game history to throw three touchdown passes in the opening period. Despite a couple of drops from his receivers, Klubnik has been efficient, completing 11-of-19 passes for 129 yards and three scores.
The Tigers got off to a dream start on defense, with T.J. Parker forcing a strip sack on SMU’s opening possession. Two plays later, Klubnik connected with freshman standout Bryant Wesco for a 33-yard touchdown. Clemson capitalized again after forcing a three-and-out, marching 75 yards in eight plays to build an early two-score lead.
Defensively, Clemson has bounced back in a big way after last week’s struggles. SMU’s high-powered offense has been neutralized, with quarterback Kevin Jennings limited to 102 passing yards and a costly interception. The Tigers’ adjustments to SMU’s personnel have worked brilliantly, holding the Mustangs to just one touchdown in the half.
While SMU’s run defense has lived up to its reputation, Clemson has made the most of its chances. Nolan Hauser overcame an early missed field goal to nail a 44-yarder late in the half, extending the lead to 17 points. With a +2 turnover margin and a defense playing lights out, Clemson is in a strong position to secure another ACC title and potentially a spot in the College Football Playoff.
