Gregg Popovich praises Spurs’ recent play: ‘Showing more consistency’

After the San Antonio Spurs’ tough loss to the Chicago Bulls, Gregg Popovich praised his team’s recent level of play.

For the majority of the season, the San Antonio Spurs have been struggling mightily. They are 7-31 on the season, on pace to match the worst record in franchise history. The goal for this season was always going to be the development of the team’s young core, but losing this much certainly wasn’t in the cards.

However, the Spurs have been turning things around as of late. Heading into their game against the Chicago Bulls on Saturday night, the Spurs had won two games in a row against the Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets. While they weren’t able to get the job done against the Bulls, they still put up a good fight.

After the game, head coach Gregg Popovich showed love to his team for the level of play they’ve been at for the past few games.

“This is the fifth game in a row where they’ve played like this and played well enough to win a game,” Popovich said via ESPN. “Starting with [two close losses against] Milwaukee then Cleveland and the two wins and tonight. We are showing more consistency. Down the stretch, experienced guys probably feel a little more comfortable shooting those 3s, but we had the same ones. Eventually, they’ll fall.”

Victor Wembanyama didn’t even play on Saturday night, but the Spurs were in the game anyway. Tre Jones and Keldon Johnson stepped up in a big way, scoring 30 and 26 points, respectively.

The postseason is out of the picture for the Spurs this season, but with the short-term improvements they’ve already made, the future is bright in San Antonio.
