The San Antonio Spurs were in New York on Saturday night to take on the Brooklyn Nets. In what was Dennis Schroder’s debut for the Nets after a trade deadline deal saw him join via a deal with the Toronto Raptors, the German point guard showed out. He put up 15 points and 12 assists, taking down the Spurs in the process.
Their Saturday night contest marked the Spurs’ 53rd game of the season. While that may be normal for most players, rookies aren’t used to the long slog of the season – even when the rookie is a 20-year-old Frenchman who has been preparing for life in the NBA for years.
After the Spurs’ loss to the Nets, Victor Wembanyama revealed that head coach Gregg Popovich has been keeping him informed about the grind of an 82-game NBA season.
“He told me a little bit about it and so it’s not more complicated than that, it’s just hard to do,” Wembanyama said via ESPN.
Wembanyama is playing extremely well, but not even he, one of the best prospects in recent memory, is immune to the fatigue that comes with a long season.
