The San Antonio Spurs have failed to string together wins this season. In fact, they’ve managed to put together one of the worst seasons in franchise history thus far. They’ve missed the postseason for four years in a row, and this year will mark the fifth.
San Antonio is just 5-30 on the season, and with their loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday night, they’ve now lost five in a row. Led by Jarrett Allen, the Cavaliers hung on to take down the Spurs, taking down Victor Wembanyama and company despite being down two stars in Darius Garland and Evan Mobley.
Before the game, San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich was asked about how the Spurs planned on taking away the Cavaliers’ passing lanes. He kept it real with his hilarious response. (H/t Jonah Kubicek of Inside the Spurs)
“We probably won’t,” Popovich said. “I can give you some b***s*** if you want.”
Cleveland ended up dishing out a modest 27 assists against the Spurs, shooting 43-of-88 (48.9%) from the field and 16-of-43 (37.2%) from three-point range as a team.
The Cavaliers totaled 117 points on the night, which is actually fewer than the average the Spurs give up on a game-to-game basis, as they are allowing 122.7 points on average this season.
Perhaps Popovich’s doubt in his team’s abilities motivated them to step up on the defensive end. While the Spurs weren’t able to bring home a win, they stormed back at the end of the game and gave themselves a fighting chance.
This year is all about learning for the Spurs, and in typical Popovich fashion, he’s not going to tell it like it is.
