Greg Schiano updates on Marquise Watson’s health progress: ‘Let’s all keep him in our prayers’

Marquise Watson, the Rutgers defensive line coach, continues his health recovery.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Marquise Watson continues his recovery, with Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano asking for fans to pray for the defensive line coach.

Watson has not coached this season, having fallen ill prior to the season opener against Northwestern. In his second season with Rutgers, Watson has quickly earned a reputation as a very good positional coach who is well-liked in the locker room.

He also has developed into a very strong recruiter.

Asked on Wednesday about Watson, the response by Schiano was positive about his assistant coach’s recovery.

“He’s hanging in there,” Schiano said. “He’s a little by little -it’s (a) slow recovery. But he’s working.”

Schiano also said that he is keeping in contact with Watson, making regularly visits to check-in and connect.

“I go I go see him regularly,” Schiano said.

“But let’s all keep him in our prayers.”

Last Thursday, Schiano was asked about the performance of Jared Keyte, a positional assistant who has stepped up to fill-in for Watson.

In 2021, Keyte was the defensive coordinator at Maine.

“Coach Keyte has done a really good job. You know, he’s been a defensive coordinator at the FCS level,” Schiano said on Wednesday following practice.

“He’s a very knowledgeable football coach and he was working kind of in a quality control position with the defensive line. And when coach Watson fell ill, he stepped in and has done a very good job. He’s kept it kept it together.”
