More additions could be incoming for Rutgers football on the offensive side of the ball with head coach Greg Schiano saying this week that his team will be active in the transfer portal at the wide receiver position.
Given what the Scarlet Knights lost this offseason, it is certainly understandable why the program would see a need to add a veteran player or two at the wide receiver position. Rutgers is replacing their top three wide receivers from a year ago in Sean Ryan, Aron Cruickshank and Shameen Jones. They did add Nasiem Brantley via the transfer portal this offseason from Western Illinois.
Brantley was a very strong player on a weak Illinois offense. Last season, he had 53 catches for 903 receiving yards with nine touchdowns.
In a Thursday appearance on the Big Ten Network, Schiano hinted that his team is likely to hit the transfer portal again to add depth at the wide receiver position. He was asked about how he feels about his group of young wide receivers.
“Young but talented – got a bunch of young guys,” Schiano told the Big Ten Network.
“We might do a little bit in the portal – we have one already – may end up getting another one or two. But it’s just really till the young guys grow up. And I think they’re growing fast.”
Schiano then singled out two of his veteran players for having a strong spring
“And Chris Long has a chance. You know, he did some things a year ago but was kind of a spot player. I think he’s ready to have a breakout. And Isaiah Washington, who’s an older guy who’s really come on this spring and really served as the leader of the unit,” Schiano said.
“So I think we got a chance there and again, it’s all going to be about quarterback play in relation to wide receiver play.”

Schiano appeared on the Big Ten Network to highlight Saturday’s annual ‘Spring Game’ which will be held at SHI Stadium. A number of top high school recruits will be in attendance at the game.
