Gavin Wimsatt saw time on two series late in the fourth quarter, the Rutgers football freshman quarterback making his second collegiate appearance in Saturday’s 38-3 win at Indiana.
The former four-star recruit, who enrolled early this fall at Rutgers after playing three games in high school to start his season, didn’t throw a pass but had three carries for 20 yards in mop-up duty. Two weeks ago, Wimsatt threw a critical completion late in the third quarter of a win at Illinois. Wimsatt’s pass on fourth down in that game continued Rutgers drive and led to the Scarlet Knights go-ahead touchdown in their Big Ten road win.
And now on Saturday, Wimsatt again saw time in a Rutgers road win against a Big Ten opponent. The two series were the most extensive run of action for the freshman this season.
“I wanted to play him today and didn’t know how it was going to come out. We always had these thoughts and plans,” head coach Greg Schiano told reporters after the game.
“But when you let that dictate the games within the games – the game is the most important thing and then you know we were able to [play Wimsatt]. So, winning the game I should say is the most important thing.”
With the win, Rutgers is now 5-5 (2-5 Big Ten). Indiana, who finished last season ranked No. 12 in the Associated Press poll, is 2-8 (0-7 Big Ten).
Wimsatt can make two more appearances this season without burning his redshirt.
Rutgers has two remaining regular season games left beginning with a game at Penn State this Saturday. With a win in one of their last two remaining games, the Scarlet Knights would be bowl eligible for the first time since 2014.
