‘Grateful and thankful:’ Dwayne Haskins gets choked up in press conference

After returning to the field for the first time since being benched, Haskins was emotional following the win for Washington.

When the former first-round pick was benched after a tough game in Week 4 against the Cleveland Browns, things got pretty dark. Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins wasn’t just benched, but demoted to third-string, placed behind a guy who was coming off of 17 surgeries on his leg, with many thinking he’d never play again. For a player who was drafted with the No. 15 overall pick just a year earlier, that’s a massive hit to the ego, without knowing when or where he’d get another chance.

His next chance finally came on Sunday when Washington’s starter Alex Smith was held out of the second half with some minor tightness in his calf. Haskins got his first game-action in a couple of months, and he wanted to do the most with it.

The end-product was nothing special — he went 7-for-12 for 51 yards — but he was out there competing again, and he had several nice passes that showed some growth. After the game, Haskins was admittedly choked up and said he had tears in his eyes upon his return.

Who knows when we will see Haskins next, as Smith’s injury doesn’t seem to be too serious, but there’s a chance that his time in Washington isn’t over. He still has a future in the NFL, we will just have to wait and see where it’s at.
