Former Boston Celtics restricted free agent forward Grant Williams recently related how believes his exit from the team was inevitable and not solely driven by financial considerations in an interview with Heavy’s Steve Bulpett. While the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and the financial implications of the punitive second apron certainly played a role, he suggests that there were other factors involved.

“The CBA can make it difficult for teams, but it doesn’t prevent teams from making the moves they really want to make,” said Williams of the Celtics’ decision to let the Charlotte native be signed and traded to the Dallas Mavericks.

Williams holds no ill will, however, stating that “it was one of those things where I think both sides just did what’s best for each.”

“It was a situation where I think I could have stayed and we could have had success, but with the position we would have been in with the logjam, it might have been smarter financially for the team and better opportunity for me to go somewhere else,” he added.

“But it’s one of those things where I wouldn’t have been mad if I’d have stayed, but at the same time I think we both are in a good space now.”
