BOSTON — As the calendar has turned to February, former University of Tennessee basketball player Grant Williams has posted some solid performances in this, his rookie season, with the Boston Celtics.
Williams, who left Rocky Top as a junior last season as the two-time defending Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, was selected in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft over the summer. Williams has had a roller-coaster ride of a rookie campaign in Boston.
But in three February games, although a small sample size, Williams is averaging 9.5 points in four games.
He started for Boston on Friday in its 112-107 victory over Atlanta at TD Garden. The former Vol scored seven points and had two assists for the Celtics (36-15) while seeing 29 minutes of playing time.
Earlier this month, Williams scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds in the Celtics’ 116-100 win over Orlando. He also scored 13 points, had six rebounds and dished out two assists on Boston’s recent trip to Atlanta where the Celtics nabbed a 123-115 victory. Williams had five points and three boards in a 116-95 victory over longtime rival Philadelphia on Saturday, Feb. 1.
