After a few years under the radar, Grady Jarrett is finally receiving some recognition around the NFL for his play on the interior of the Atlanta Falcons’ defensive line. Jarrett’s run has been impressive, but the team’s lack of defensive stability and three-year playoff drought have held him back to a certain degree.
The former fifth-round pick made his second Pro Bowl in 2020. Jarrett’s talent is undeniable when you watch the film, but being an interior pass rusher, he’s probably never going to put up eye-popping numbers. Still, more outlets continue to recognize the Falcons lineman.
CBS Sports did a feature looking at the league’s best edge rushers and interior defensive linemen. Jarrett was rated as the No. 7 interior pass rusher.
“Jarrett’s sack numbers dipped last season (he had four after collecting 13.5 in the previous two seasons) but he established a new career high with 21 quarterback hits,” writes CBS Sports’ Jared Dubin. “He made a play in the backfield 29 percent more often than the average interior lineman, and was named to his second straight Pro Bowl. Heading into his age-28 season, Jarrett is right in his prime and should continue to play at a high level.”
Jarrett is no doubt in his prime and his contract reflects an elite player at his position. This season could be different than years past, however, with Dean Pees bringing his 3-4 scheme — which could see Jarrett playing more at defensive end.
