‘Good Morning Football’ hosts praise Trevor Lawrence’s preseason debut

The hosts of “Good Morning Football” gushed over Lawrence’s first preseason game.

First-overall pick Trevor Lawrence’s debut in the preseason Saturday night wasn’t exactly the coronation many had hoped for. Lawrence was solid in limited action, but as the starter, he only saw two series and finished the game 6-of-9 for 71 yards.

Though many in the national media seem to be more impressed with the performance of Justin Fields, who shined in his first game with Chicago (albeit seeing more time than Lawrence did), the hosts of “Good Morning Football” were impressed by Lawrence’s first action.

Shaun O’Hara made an interesting analogy to describe his play.

“When I was a kid someone asked me if I had ever tried Big League Chew… That’s Trevor Lawrence,” O’Hara said. “He’s Big League Chew. He’s as advertised. I think for Trevor Lawrence, you just heard him talk about every throw, the sack that he took, ‘Hey man that was on me.’ Quarterback recall, to me, has always been one of the biggest determining factors in how good you are. I thought he was phenomenal…”

O’Hara broke down several of Lawrence’s passes, highlighting the completions to Marvin Jones Jr., who finished tied as the Jags’ leading receiver. Kyle Brandt concurred with O’Hara’s analysis.

“Trevor Lawrence was exactly what we want him to do,” Brandt said. “He’s been a pro since he was a sophomore in high school.”

Not to be outdone, Peter Schrager compared Lawrence to an elite class of quarterback prospects.

“He’s got a shot at being an 18-year starter, 20-year starter,” he said. “That’s the hype on this guy, that he is in that Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning, John Elway class coming out of college where it’s just ‘Throw me on the field, let’s go.'”

Jaguars fans may have liked to have seen more from Lawrence in his debut, but he certainly made some impressive throws and appears to be in line to win the starting job, especially after Gardner Minshew II struggled against Cleveland. We should see more of Lawrence in Jacksonville’s second preseason game on the road against New Orleans.
