Golf Channel announces major layoffs coming to Orlando-based staff

On Monday, June 22, Golf Channel announced that it would lay off most of its Orlando based staff, then allow their former employees to reapply for a smaller selection of jobs. The Golf Channel, which is owned by NBC, also announced in February that it would be moving its Orlando offices to Stamford, Connecticut, later this year. Jobs in all categories were lost, including producers, writers, and camera operators. It is still unclear what percentage of the staff will be let go. Golf Channel has been based in Orlando since its launch in 1995. Since 2013, nearly all of NBC Sports operations began to be based out of Stamford to take advantage of tax benefits. A Golf Channel spokesman said in a statement to Golfweek, “This week, we’re moving forward with our next phase with date notifications for impacted employees…” “…NBC Sports is committed to delivering world-class golf coverage for our loyal audiences, and serving golfers’ needs through our portfolio of industry-leading technology and services.” Golf Channel has more live tournament coverage than all other U.S. networks combined, televised in more than 70 countries and broadcasted in nine languages.
