Following the Rams’ loss to the 49ers on Sunday, Sean McVay did something he doesn’t often do: openly criticize his quarterback. He said flatly that Jared Goff “has to take better care of the football” after throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble.
He wasn’t wrong and no one disagreed with McVay’s assessment. Not even Goff himself. On Wednesday, Goff was asked about his coach’s comments and he wasn’t bothered by them at all. What would’ve bothered him is if McVay was lying, which he’s not.
Goff said he “has to take care of the ball better,” vowing to do so moving forward.
Rams QB Jared Goff on HC Sean McVay’s specific postgame comments about him needing to take better care of the ball: “If he was lying, I’d feel different. He’s absolutely right. I’m a big boy, I can handle it.”

He’ll have a chance to rebound this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, who have only forced 14 turnovers this season – which is 18th in the NFL. Goff has typically played well against Arizona, too, going 6-1 with 10 touchdowns and only three interceptions in his career.
If Goff can’t do a better job protecting the ball and avoiding giveaways, the Rams aren’t going to get very far in the playoffs, assuming they make it. He has 14 turnovers this season, which is tied for the second-most in football.
It’s hard to win games when your quarterback is careless with the ball, and both Goff and McVay know it.
