As the New England Patriots get set to take on the Los Angeles Chargers, several players on the Los Angeles sideline would benefit New England. One of those players would be wide receiver Mike Williams. He is the perfect candidate for this week’s “Gimmie Him,” where we consider the Patriots stealing one of their opponents’ stars.
Alongside quarterback Justin Herbert, Williams has been an electric part of the Chargers offense. On the season, he has caught 33 passes for 498 yards and six touchdowns. He has spread the field nicely for Los Angeles, averaging 15.1 yards per catch. His 23 receiving first downs tie him with fellow positional teammate Keenan Allen.
It would’ve been easy to pick Allen for this segment. With that being said, Williams offers more big-play ability at this point in time. Consider this statistic: Williams has more receiving touchdowns than the entire New England Patriots wide receiving corps. Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne have two each. The Patriots leader in receiving touchdowns is tight end Hunter Henry. He has four on the year.
When you look at what Williams has been able to put together over his last five games, his numbers are impressive. He recorded nine catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns against Kansas City on September 26. More recently against Cleveland, he caught 16 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns. He can rack up yards and catches in bunches, and he has shown he can be a proven asset.
Although the Patriots are getting decent production out of their wide receivers, Williams would give the Patriots that big-play threat that they are missing at this point in the season. As the Patriots look to push the ball down the field a bit more, Williams would certainly help quarterback Mac Jones in that regard. Although Keenan Allen may dominate the headlines for Los Angeles, Williams would be a better fit for the New England offense.
