As the New England Patriots get set to take on the Houston Texans, there is one particular Texans player that I think would benefit the Patriots tremendously. Quarterback Deshaun Watson would undoubtedly be a spark plug for New England.
Cam Newton has been performing at a better level as of late in comparison to his last couple of games. However, Watson would be able to add another dynamic piece to the Patriots offense. On the year, he has thrown for 25,39 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Perhaps lost in all of this is the fact that he has put up good numbers without the likes of DeAndre Hopkins.
In his last game, he performed reasonably well, going 20-of-30 on the afternoon, throwing for 130 yards and a touchdown. He has been on a bit of a hot streak lately, throwing for nine touchdowns and no interceptions in his last four games. His best game during the stretch was in a 42-36 loss to Tennessee. He threw four touchdowns in that contest.
Watson brings a level of arm strength and unpredictability for defenses under center. Cam Newton also has that to an extent, but Watson is in a tremendous rhythm right now. He would be able to give the Patriots a younger quarterback that can throw an accurate deep ball and has mobility. Right now, Newton has the mobility. The touch is not quite there yet. Watson has tremendous touch not only this season but the router his entire career. It’s that made him so special and Clemson, and it has translated to the National Football League.
Watson has the hot hand right now, and has put together an unprecedented season, despite the Texans trading away their biggest star. He would be able to help the Patriots find stability at quarterback, and allow them the same flexibility that Newton gives them currently.
Right now, Watson is a more complete player. That’s not a knock on Newton, it more so speaks to how efficient Watson has been over the past couple of weeks. Inserting him into this Patriots offense would give the unit a tremendous boost.
