With the New England Patriots preparing for the Cleveland Browns, this week’s Gimmie Him comes from the running back position. Nick Chubb has been a key piece for the Browns offense ever since he came into the league in 2018. Drafted four picks after former Patriots running back Sony Michel, Chubb has established himself as one of the best players at his position. It is certainly fun to imagine how Chubb would perform in this Patriots offense.
The former Georgia star has rushed for 4,278 yards and 34 touchdowns in his time with Cleveland. He made an instant impact in his rookie year, rushing for 996 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2019 and 2020 he had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. His hard rushing style combined with his speed has made him a dual-threat running back.
This year, he has 721 yards and six touchdowns in seven games. He is coming off a contest against Cincinnati that saw him take over the game. He had 14 carries for 137 yards and two touchdowns.
The Patriots have found running backs that fit their offensive system and made it work. Just take Damien Harris for example. He has proven to be a successful running back and a staple of the Patriots offense, especially in the red zone. However, it is fun to imagine a running back as explosive as Chubb in New England.
Especially with a rookie quarterback under center, Chubb’s explosive playmaking ability could have added another piece to the New England offense. He would be able to take even more pressure off Mac Jones and put the Patriots in manageable down-and-distance situations.
Especially when you consider that Michel is no longer on the roster now, the decision to not select Chubb looks a bit questionable. Having him on this New England roster would solidify the running game for years to come. It is fun to dream about, although something tells me he will be in Cleveland for years to come.
