The Kansas City Chiefs are losing another member of their coaching staff, this time on the offensive side of the ball.
After having an in-person interview with the New York Giants’ brass on Wednesday, Chiefs QB coach/passing game coordinator Mike Kafka is set to become the offensive coordinator in New York under new head coach Brian Daboll. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports that the Giants are expected to hire Kafka, but the deal isn’t done quite yet.
Kafka, who was a former NFL QB under Andy Reid in Philly, just completed his fifth season as a member of the Chiefs’ coaching staff, beginning as an offensive quality control coach in 2017. He was promoted to QB coach in 2018, Patrick Mahomes’ first as starter and MVP-winning season. He added the passing game analyst title in 2021.

Reid suggested there could be some departures from his staff this offseason, at least compared to other seasons. Now, he’ll be looking for a replacement QB coach. As far as in-house candidates are concerned, look for assistant QB coach David Girardi to potentially be promoted in Kansas City. There is also potential for the soon-to-be 37-year-old Chad Henne, should he retire from the NFL, to join the coaching staff in some capacity to work with quarterbacks.
Chiefs fans will be clamoring for former QB Alex Smith to join the coaching staff, but it’s hard to imagine him leaving his role as an ESPN analyst.
