The San Antonio Spurs competed in one of the best games of the season on Thursday night, taking on the Milwaukee Bucks on national television. They had a chance to win up until the very end of the game, but a dominant stretch from Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard helped close things out for the Bucks, as they earned a 125-121 win over San Antonio.
Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell battled it out with Antetokounmpo and Lillard all night long, trading highlight-reel plays at every turn. Unfortunately, the game came down to a Tre Jones three-ball in the corner, and the Spurs point guard came up just short on what would have been the game-tying shot. However, the loss shouldn’t take away from Wembanyama’s greatness or the Spurs’ impressive showing.
After the game, Antetokounmpo spoke about Wembanyama on the TNT broadcast, as it was the first time the two big men matched up.
“He’s unbelievable,” Antetokounmpo said. “Unbelievable talent. Can score at will any time he wants. Plays the right way. Plays to win. It was great playing against him.”
Wembanyama finished the game with 27 points, nine rebounds, one assist, one steal, and five blocks, including a monster block against Antetokounpmo at the rim that gave the Spurs a chance to tie the game on the other end.
Meanwhile, Vassell put up 34 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Antetokounmpo ended with a dominant 44 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists, while Lillard managed to score 25 points and drop 10 dimes.
This game was absolutely electric from start to finish, and the Spurs should be proud of the way they competed.
