G.G. Jackson decommits from North Carolina

UNC basketball recruit G.G. Jackson has officially decommitted just a few months after joining their 2023 recruiting class.

It’s finally happened.

After a few weeks of speculation, five-star recruit [autotag]G.G. Jackson[/autotag] has de-committed from North Carolina on Thursday night. Hours after 247Sports reported that Jackson would be decommitting, the recruit made it official and took to Twitter to announce the decision.

Jackson released a statement thanking UNC coaches as he was committed for just over two months. But as Jackson’s stock rose to being the No. 1 player, so did the rumors and in the end those in his camp got what they wanted and he’s likely heading to South Carolina for their 2022 recruiting class.

Here is the message Jackson posted on Twitter:

“Thank you to coach Hubert Davis and the UNC Basketball staff for recruiting me and giving me a chance to play for your university,” Jackson said in a statement. “My family has stuck by my side since I was born and have been the biggest supporters in my life by guiding me in the right direction. I have decided to decommit from UNC to explore other options that can help me grow from a teenage boy to an adult and to put me in the best position to reach my dream goal which is the NBA.”

Even with Jackson calling UNC his dream school, the plan for most around him was to stay at home and play for South Carolina. With Frank Martin fired, it appeared as if Jackson made his decision and then picked UNC but was it really final?

The Gamecocks continued to press on Jackson and there was pressure to get to the NBA as quick as he could. The Tar Heels didn’t have an open scholarship in 2022 after taking Pete Nance. But according to Inside Carolina, they would have taken Jackson in 2022 but were told he didn’t plan on reclassifying.

Alas, this saga is finally over. We wish G.G. the best of luck at South Carolina or the G-League.
