Georgia not the SEC’s top dog, FPI says

Through five weeks, there’s a familiar face atop the ESPN FPI standings in the SEC — and it isn’t Georgia.

The Georgia Bulldogs have lost one game in the past 42 months, but ESPN FPI doesn’t think the two-time defending national champions are the best team in the SEC, nor does it think they should be the favorites to win the conference. It favors Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

A year after going 15-0, the Bulldogs are still undefeated early on in 2023. However, they’ve played two conference games against South Carolina and Auburn and trailed in both second halves.

Meanwhile, Alabama has looked dominant since SEC play began, beating Ole Miss by two scores at home before ripping Mississippi State to shreds last week.

To see how Ole Miss’s upset over LSU and Kentucky’s drubbing of Florida shook up the rest of the conference’s math, here is how the SEC stacks up.
