George R.R. Martin denies that Elden Ring’s characters are named after him

The author swiftly debunks a popular rumor floating around.

There’s been plenty of speculation that several of Elden Ring’s characters have names that begin with George R.R. Martin’s initials, though the author denies that this was an intentional easter egg.

Basically, there are four demigods in Elden Ring: Godfrey, Rennala, Radagon, and Marika. If you take the first letters of their names and slam them together, you get “GRRM,” an obvious reference, right? Not so, it seems.

On Monday, Martin updated his blog and took some time to address the alleged self-referential naming convention.

“I have been writing and publishing stories since 1971, and I suspect that I have been giving characters names beginning with R and G and M since the start,” Martin said. “Along with the other twenty-three letters of the alphabet as well. Coming up with names is hard, especially since [A Song of Ice & Fire] uses so many of them, and I am fond of giving family members and close kin names that have something in common.”

“But really, why would I have to hide my name inside the game? My name is right there on the game, as one of the creators,” Martin continues. “Hey, Elden Ring is exciting enough, no need to make up stuff.”

Now we just need Martin’s take on the Maidenless memes, and everything is golden.
