Saturday is nearly here Gators fans, with both college football and several other sports on the weekend agenda for University of Florida athletics. While the clock ticks down to game time, let us take a look at what is going on around the sports world.
At the top of the news, while the Southeastern Conference made it three weeks before its first coronavirus postponement, the Big Ten’s remade plan for the regular season has already fallen apart after just one week of play. The conference’s inability to play even two weeks of the regular season without having a game canceled due to COVID-19 highlights the stupidity of trying to force nine games into nine weeks in an effort to gain ground in the College Football Playoff race.
The lone Gators team in action yesterday was the women’s golf team, who finished up competition at the East Lake Cup in Atlanta. The squad finished its final round of the fall season with authority, claiming four straight matches to clinch third place in the final results.
Today, the No. 10 women’s and No. 3 men’s swimming and diving teams take on the Georgia Bulldogs, whose teams rank No. 4 and No. 8 in the nation, respectively, in Athens. The competition is the first of the fall season for both teams.
The cross country team kicks off the SEC Championships Thursday morning after participating in just three events the past month. The meet is hosted by LSU and is being held in Baton Rouge.
Gators soccer will also see action today against the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville, Tenn. The Lady Gators enter with a 1-3-1 record during a hard-luck season and will look to get back on track with a win against the 2-3-1 Vols.
Finally, the fourth-ranked Florida volleyball squad heads to Tuscaloosa for a back-to-back match with the Alabama Crimson Tide. Florida boasts a 2-0 record on the year while Bama is winless in two matches.
