Nearly a week into the month of October and in the thick of the Southeastern Conference’s 2020 football season, we now spend our days pining for the weekends to tune into our favorite teams as they compete on the autumn gridiron. For Florida Gators fans, a noon showdown with the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station is on the agenda for this coming Saturday.
Our top story today has those same Gators still under consideration for the College Football Playoffs in the eyes of USA TODAY Sports. The 12-person committee still thinks Florida still looks stronger than Georgia, despite the Bulldogs looking impressive against Auburn.
In other UF sports news, both the men’s and women’s golf teams participated in the inaugural Blessings Collegiate Invitational on Monday in Fayetteville, Ark., with the men struggling and finishing a collective 12 over par and ninth place overall while the women finished 7 over par and sit third in the 14-team all-SEC field after the first round. The tournament continues today at 1 p.m. EDT and will conclude on Wednesday.
Around the Swamp
- Sports Illustrated’s latest top 10 features Florida at No. 5: Forde thinks the UF offense is for real and points out that though the defense struggled, it was more successful against big plays than in the first game against Ole Miss.
- Zach Carter named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week: Despite concern over the Gators’ defensive play, two weeks of play have netted two conference superlatives from individuals on the unit.
- Florida Gators and its pair of Kyles could be the SEC’s newest gem: We are very early in an admittedly strange and unpredictable season, but it’s worth asking: Does Florida have the potential to be this year’s LSU?
- Florida falls to No. 3 in USA TODAY Sports’ SEC rankings: Despite beating South Carolina 38-24, Florida fell to the No. 3 spot in this week’s rankings.
- LSU’s updated COVID-19 protocols are nothing short of a joke: Both of the changes mentioned are rather startling given that there is still an active pandemic that has interrupted both collegiate and professional sports, but hubris is strong in the Southeastern Conference.
It’s great to be a Florida Gator!
