It’s a Christmas Eve edition of Gators News on this lovely winter Thursday, and while the yuletide cheer is in full swing, Florida Gators athletics is taking a bit of a breather for the holidays. But that does not mean that there is no news to report; quite to the contrary, it is more than just the holiday season.
The end of December also represents the college football awards season, in which UF has several representatives among those receiving hardware from various institutions around the nation. Here is a quick look at a few of the accolades our beloved Gators are aiming for.
Around the Swamp
- Florida’s Keyontae Johnson diagnosed with heart inflammation that has been associated with COVID-19: Johnson, the SEC preseason player of the year, is expected to be out for a minimum of three months and likely will miss the rest of the 2020-21 season.
- Gators lose cornerback Chester Kimbrough to NCAA transfer portal: Backup corner Chester Kimbrough has entered the transfer portal, per a report from Chris Hummer of 247Sports.
- An oral history of the Florida-Florida State football rivalry: It’s worth looking at how an insignificant local rivalry became not just the premier in-state rivalry, but one of the best in all of college football.
- This impact defensive lineman hinted at a return to Gainesville next season: Florida may be getting some good news, as redshirt junior defensive lineman Zachary Carter posted a tweet hinting at a return for his redshirt senior season.
- Final SEC power rankings from ESPN are unkind to the Gators: In the conference power rankings, Texas A&M finished above Florida at No. 2, while UF comes in at No. 3.
- ESPN’s Heisman Watch just isn’t feeling Kyle Trask’s case: Despite leading the nation in both yards (4,125) and touchdowns (43), Florida quarterback Kyle Trask is now a longshot to take home the Heisman Trophy.
It’s great to be a Florida Gator!
