After a few shaky weeks of SEC play, the Florida Gators swept the No. 5 Vanderbilt Commodores over the weekend, capping things off with a 6-2 win on Mother’s Day.
Wyatt Langford led the offense with two home runs, a double and four runs batted in. The future first-round draft pick is firing on all cylinders after missing some time earlier in the year with a groin injury. He even made a few leaping plays in the outfield over the weekend.
Jac Caglianone also had a multi-hit day, but he didn’t add to his program-record home run total this weekend as many expected. He did impress on the mound, striking out nine over 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball. Brandon Neely took over for Caglianone with two outs in the seventh but couldn’t prevent the run from scoring.
Vanderbilt scored again in the eighth when center fielder Michael Robertson misread a ball hit to him that ended up being a double. With just a handful of outs to go in the game, Florida gladly traded the run for an out at first. Neely closed things out with a flawless ninth and Florida now controls its own fate in the SEC East.
The Commodores entered the weekend up two games on the Gators, but now UF leads by one. The regular season comes to an end at the end of next week, following the conclusion of the Kentucky series. Then, it’s playoff time.
It also happened to be Senior Day at the ballpark, and the program said goodbye to seven members of the team.
