CHICAGO — Former University of Tennessee baseball player Garrett Crochet has signed with the Chicago White Sox.
Crochet, a left-handed pitcher, who was slated to be the Volunteers’ ace on the mound before the 2020 season was brought to a halt by the COVID-19 pandemic in March, was selected by Chicago in the first round of the Major League Baseball Entry Draft.
He was the 11th overall pick and was signed to a minor league contract, which included a bonus of $4,547,500.
Crochet made one start during his junior season in Knoxville before the season ended due to the pandemic. He threw 3.2 innings and had six strikeouts.
The 6-foot-6-inch Crochet went 5-3 for the Diamond Vols as a sophomore in 2019. He made 18 appearances and averaged more than 11 strikeouts per nine innings.
