PISCATAWAY, N.J. –Despite playing what was arguably the ugliest of their three games to start the season, Rutgers football is now 3-0 following a xx-xx win over Virginia Tech.
It wasn’t pretty and wasn’t often downright ugly, but it worked for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers raced out to an early lead. A fumble recovery by Wesley Bailey on the game’s opening drive gifted Rutgers some tremendous field position. On the next play, Rutgers turned that turnover into points when Kyle Monangai ran 19 yards for what would be a 7-0 lead.
Gavin Wimatt would run for a 34-yard touchdown and then throw a five-yard pass to Christian Dremmel for a touchdown pass that would stake Rutgers to a 21-3 lead at halftime.
After conceding a touchdown in the third quarter and then early in the fourth quarter, Rutgers clinging to a 21-16 lead. But then they got a big play from Kyle Monangai, who ran 55 yards for a touchdown.
