Gallery: Large metaphor hits Old Trafford after Manchester United-Arsenal game

Were these the tears of Red Devils fans flooding the stadium? Was it an ode to the team’s leaky defense?

After another loss in one of Manchester United’s worst seasons in recent memory, the floodgates opened at Old Trafford. Literally.

Torrential rains hit United’s iconic stadium following Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal, causing the roof to cave in and sending water cascading down onto the seats below.

Drain pipes failed as water rushed down the aisles, causing a biblical scene at the 74,000-seat stadium.

Thankfully, fans had already departed by the time the worst damage had been done, but the flooding will likely increase new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe’s desire to build a new stadium.

It also provided a timely metaphor for another United season that’s gone off the rails. Were these the tears of Red Devils fans flooding the stadium? Was it an ode to the team’s leaky defense? View the pictures here and decide.
