After a long three days, the Kansas City Chiefs have finally wrapped up the 2020 NFL Draft.

General manager Brett Veach went into the draft with five picks and made five picks. There wasn’t any movement for the Chiefs during the course of the draft. It was only a little surprising because they made trades up in each of the previous three years. Assuming that the team doesn’t trade into the sixth or seventh round using future picks, here is the complete Chiefs’ 2020 draft class:

Round Position Player School
Round 1, 32 Overall RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire LSU
Round 2, 63 Overall LB Willie Gay Jr. Mississippi St.
Round 3, 96 Overall OT Lucas Niang TCU
Round 4, 138 Overall CB L’Jarius Sneed LA Tech
Round 5, 177 Overall DE Mike Danna Michigan

On Day 1, Veach managed to hold on to the Chiefs’ first-round pick and make his first selection in that round as general manager. He took LSU’s stud RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire and there seems to be a lot of excitement in the building for him. Andy Reid thinks he’s better than Brian Westbrook and the team revealed that he was the player Patrick Mahomes wanted in the first round.

On Day 2, the Chiefs added a high upside athlete at the linebacker position in the second round. Veach admitted that he didn’t know where other teams stood on Willie Gay Jr. because of his off-field issues, but he was one of the Chiefs’ top-rated coverage defenders regardless of position in this draft class. In the third round, the Chiefs got a steal at the offensive tackle position in TCU OT Lucas Niang. While Veach says he can come in and compete at the guard spot immediately, Niang is a tackle first and probably will end up playing there during the majority of his career.

On Day 3, the Chiefs added L’Jarius Sneed in the fourth round. While Sneed played safety in 2019, he prefers playing cornerback. The Chiefs have told him that’s where he’ll be playing in Kansas City too. In the fifth round, they grabbed Michigan DE Mike Danna. He’s someone that I think will surprise some folks early on. His athletic ability should help him see the field early, he could even contribute on special teams which is a rare quality for a defensive lineman.

The draft isn’t quite yet over, but when it is, look for the Chiefs to bring in a myriad of undrafted free agents. They still need to sign 15 players to have a full 90-man offseason roster. We’ll be tracking those signings for you. Be sure to follow along as the Chiefs add some more talented players to fill out the roster.
