Full breakdown of Kenny Clark’s contract extension with Packers

A full breakdown of the four-year, $70 million contract extension signed by Packers DL Kenny Clark.

Kenny Clark’s new contract with the Green Bay Packers – which features $70 million in new money – keeps his cap hit low in 2020 and 2021 before ballooning over the final three years of the deal.

Full contract information on Clark’s four-year extension was made available on Tuesday.

The backloaded deal for the young superstar helps provide some financial relief for the Packers, especially over the next two years.

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Clark’s cap hits will be $6.69 million in 2020 and $7.1 million in 2021 before increasing to over $20 million during each of the final three years of the deal.

Using information provided by the NFLPA and Over the Cap, Ken Ingalls produced a full contract breakdown of the deal, which will pay Clark $77.69 million over five years and expires following the 2024 season.

Clark’s $25 million signing bonus will be prorated over the five years of the deal. He is scheduled to earn $8.4 million in roster bonuses in 2022 and 2023, and the Packers included hefty per-game and workout bonuses in the deal.

The new contract actually reduces Clark’s cap hit by $1 million in 2020. A lower cap hit in 2021 is beneficial for the Packers considering the NFL’s salary cap will likely take a significant hit due to revenue impacts from the coronavirus. Clark’s base salaries are low in both 2020 and 2021.

Clark’s base salaries by year:

2020: $1,690,000
2021: $1,000,000
2022: $8,000,000
2023: $13,000,000
2024: $15,550,000

Clark’s cap hits by year:

2020: $6,690,000
2021: $7,100,000
2022: $20,650,000
2023: $21,250,000
2024: $22,000,000

Clark, a Pro Bowler in 2019 and one of the NFL’s best interior defensive linemen, won’t even be 29 years old by the time the deal expires.
