One of the biggest questions surrounding the Raiders this season is what kind of quarterback play they can expect from Derek Carr? After setting career highs in completion percentage, passing yards and passer rating in 2019, the Raiders still need more from Carr this season if they want to make the playoffs.
Carr is widely viewed as a league-average quarterback in the NFL. While some believe he is closer to a top-10 quarterback, others believe he is closer to No. 20.
In a recent article by Steven Ruiz from For The Win, he ranked all 32 quarterbacks entering the season. Carr finished at No. 18, ahead of the likes of Jimmy Garoppolo and Baker Mayfield. Here is a snippet of Ruiz’s thoughts on Carr entering the season:
“During the 2016 season, the Raiders boasted the best line in the league, and Carr flourished. The same thing happened during his hot streak in the middle of 2019, which padded his numbers for the rest of the season; but things took a turn when the line stopped given Carr all the time in the world.”
Without a doubt, Carr is a quarterback who is the product of his environment. However, the Raiders have done an excellent job this offseason of building an offense around Carr that will help him thrive. They’ve built one of the league’s best offensive line and brought in receivers to fit Carr’s strengths.
The 2020 season is a make-or-break season for Carr and his future with the Raiders. But given the talent around him, look for him to have another career year with the Raiders.
