It’s the videos that bring a tear to your eye. A walk-on getting put on scholarship in front of his peers.
The [autotag]Oklahoma Sooners[/autotag] have had a few of those in their history. [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag] might be the most famous one but [autotag]Drake Stoops[/autotag] is someone who got to experience the feeling of being put on scholarship.
On Friday, Stoops’ future successor got that same feeling. During practice, the team looked up to the video board to find out [autotag]Gavin Freeman[/autotag] was officially put on scholarship.

Now, this should come as no surprise to fans who have kept up with the Sooners this offseason. Freeman has been talked about a lot and will be someone to play a big role during the season.
But from his first touch in a game ever being taken for a touchdown to now, all of the work paid off. Freeman took a gamble to come to Oklahoma as a walk-on with no promise of ever being put on scholarship.
“That’s literally a dream come true,” Brent Venables said while addressing the team. “As a little kid, he has been coming to these games, watching his dad come here and ball out. You want to talk about a legacy, you want to talk about a dream come true, walking into the good old days. Right now, these are the good old days for you. And man, I’m so proud to honor you the right way, and you’ve earned it every step of the way.
Venables went on to say, “There ain’t a harder worker dude on this team than Gavin Freeman.”
He could have gone to other schools that offered him a scholarship, but they weren’t Oklahoma. Those schools weren’t his dream school. So, he committed to Oklahoma and put his focus on earning that scholarship.
As his team mobbed him in celebration, and they jumped up and down to celebrate Gavin Freeman, his story is one of hard work paying off.
