The next month will be a pivotal period for Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies. The coaching staff has scheduled several visits with highly-coveted that will shape Fisch’s first full recruiting class with the program. One of those visits is with four-star edge rusher Hayden Lowe from Oaks Christian High School in California.
Lowe filled up the stat sheet last year with 100 total tackles, 8.5 sacks, and 2 interceptions. He will be tasked with improving on those terrific numbers this season as he enters his senior year.
Multiple teams are hot on Lowe’s trail with Miami, Oregon, USC, Texas, and UCLA all in consideration alongside the Huskies. Though Washington has plenty of depth at edge rusher this season, securing the future of one of the most important defensive positions is critical.
Lowe is extremely refined for just a junior in high school, he can occasionally win with true pass-rush moves rather than just simply being a better athlete than everyone else on the field. That isn’t to say that Lowe is a poor athlete, in fact, his quickness off the snap and when evading blockers is routinely one of the more impressive parts of his game.
His pursuit speed combined with a non-stop motor means he can routinely chase down plays from the backside or take down quarterbacks escaping the pocket.
Listed at 6-foot-4 and 242 pounds, he will need to continue to add strength and mass to his frame if he is to continue to find success. Though his tackle numbers don’t always show it, he can have some all-or-nothing plays that leave him susceptible to bad positioning. It seems that Lowe has the capacity to improve his overall bend, but it isn’t quite there yet. If he can further develop that area of his game, it could be integral to his improvement in overall play.
Fisch has been aggressive in ushering in a new recruiting philosophy that is extremely focused on the high school level. Fisch has shown that he wants to help Washington get back to the national stage recruiting-wise and the pursuit of Lowe will only further this goal.
