After entering the transfer portal, former Washington offensive lineman Kahlee Tafai became one of the most sought-after Huskies searching for a new home. He found it on Saturday morning, committing to coach PJ Fleck and the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
The 6-foot-5, 330-pound redshirt freshman who has three years of eligibility remaining, received offers from all over the country, including Alabama, Kansas, Nebraska, North Carolina, USC, UCLA, and others. He took several official visits before settling on the Big Ten team, where he’ll join another former Husky, running back Cameron Davis.
Tafai, who played in eight games for the Huskies last season and started the final four, is expected to compete for Fleck’s starting left tackle spot as he retools his offensive line. He’ll be joined by another transfer, UCF’s Marcellus Marshall, after last year’s starter Aireontae Ersary departed for the NFL.
Between Washington’s hefty incoming freshman class and the addition of Kansas State tackle Carver Willis, Jedd Fisch and offensive coordinator Brennan Carroll have done a solid job building depth at the position despite Tafai’s departure.
Tafai’s decision to transfer opens up one more scholarship spot along the offensive line if the coaching staff wants to further boost its depth up front.
