Former Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb wows Geno Smith

Former Washington Huskies OC Ryan Grubb is already making waves at the NFL level with the Seattle Seahawks.

Through his two years at Washington, members of the Huskies aptly called offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb a “mad scientist.”

“Ryan Grubb, man. A scientist as I call it,” wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk said at the NFL combine. “He gets out there and gets in that suite, gets in that booth, it’s like he’s out there playing Madden.”

After he didn’t get the head coaching job with the Huskies following Kalen DeBoer’s departure for Alabama, Grubb took the trip to Tuscaloosa and appeared ready to begin a stint as the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator, but came back to Seattle quickly after coach Mike Macdonald and the Seattle Seahawks came calling.

Grubb, who always felt like a great fit at the NFL level, has an opportunity to thrive as Seattle’s playcaller. He has a talented trio of receivers to work with, one of the best combinations of young running backs in the league, a strong (when healthy) offensive line, and a veteran quarterback at the helm in Geno Smith.

On Thursday, Smith told Jim Rome that the mad scientist has already been at work.

“In the past two weeks, I’ve seen plays I’ve never seen before,” Smith said. “That’s something to say for a 12 year veteran. Coach Grubb has come right in and laid it out for us. He’s set the tone for us and he has high expectations for us, we’ve got high standards, and I mean, the guy has some plays. I can’t wait to get out there and show the world what we’ve got.”

“We’ve seen what he did at UW and even the colleges he was at previously. He’s always had a really good offense and schematically, it’s going to be great.”
