As soon as freshman linebacker Khmori House announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal, it seemed like he already had a destination in mind. On Saturday afternoon, those suspicions were confirmed when the former Washington standout announced his commitment to coach Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels.
House, who will have three years of eligibility remaining on Chapel Hill, tallied 33 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception in an impressive first season that earned him an honorable mention on College Football Network’s Freshman All-America list.
His decision to enter the transfer portal was by far the most shocking of Washington’s 12 scholarship players who left Montlake, but it seems to be heavily influenced by defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, who is widely expected to make the move to Chapel Hill following the Sun Bowl to act as his father’s defensive coordinator.
“In the world of college football we’re living in, there are no decisions that catch you off guard,” Fisch said of his departure on Tuesday. “Everybody has to make decisions that they choose are best for them. Unfortunately, that’s what we’ve created. We’ve created a bad calendar. There are a lot of great things about college football. One of the things that’s a problem is the calendar. We have to find a way to allow guys to finish what they start, and then move on at the right time. I still think the portal should be in April.”
“Definitely wishing him the best. There will be others. We understand that in order for us to build our team the way we want to, with the championship culture that we have, there’s going to be a lot of influx over this year and these two portal windows.”
The 6-foot, 213-pound House is a great fit for Belichick’s scheme, and will most likely take over as a starter for the Tar Heels in 2025.
