Texas A&M is just two days away from the Maroon and White Spring Game on Saturday, April 15th, and after head coach Jimbo Fisher expressed confidence in his transfer portal strategy during his press conference on Wednesday afternoon, former USC wide receiver Gary Bryant Jr.’s impending decision which will most likely come in May could be the change agent that tips the portal scale in favor of the Aggies. Miami and Oregon also remain finalists.
Bryant has been the priority portal target for Fisher since the beginning, taking an official visit to College Station on March 24th. So the question remains, did the Aggies impress Bryant? Well, according to 247Sports interviewed Bryant’s Father, Gary Bryant Sr., Jimbo pulled out all the stops.
“We had a great time,” Bryant’s father stated. “We got to spend a lot of time with coach Jimbo Fisher and coach (Dameyune) Craig, the WR coach and really liked them both a lot.
On getting to know Fisher on a personal level:
“We had dinner with Jimbo one night and Gary liked him a lot. He’s very down to earth and easy to talk with. He’s funny and easy to talk with and did a nice job letting Gary know how much he’s needed. He said he’s not just wanted but needed and there’s a specific role for him there.”
Bryant on the opportunity to play in the SEC:
“Gary loves the SEC and feels it’s the closest thing to the NFL”. “He loves that competition and playing on that big stage. It’s how you get better and the coaches were selling us on how playing against that level only makes you better.”
As of right now, Texas A&M’s wide receiver core consists of Ainias Smith (senior), Moose Muhammad III (senior), Evan Stewart (sophomore), Noah Thomas (sophomore), Jalen Preston (senior), Raymond Cottrell (freshman), and Micah Tease (freshman). Yes, talent, especially the starting unit is top-notch, but depth remains a sore spot, and adding Gary Bryant Jr.’s experience and untapped potential would solidify the passing offense for the 2023 season.
