Former UNC forward Puff Johnson commits to Penn State

Former UNC basketball forward Puff Johnson has committed to Penn State out of the transfer portal.

Former North Carolina four-star recruit Puff Johnson has found a new home in the transfer portal.

After taking visits to Butler and Penn State, Johnson has decided it’s time to make a decision and on Wednesday, committed to the Nittany Lions. Johnson is a Pennsylvania native and will return home to play for a Penn State team that is on the rise with an impressive Big Ten season and a bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2023.

Johnson is one of six UNC players to enter the transfer portal after a tough season for the program. He spent three seasons in Chapel Hill, coming off the bench and providing key minutes.

That included the 2022 NCAA Tournament where he gave the Tar Heels a late spark in the title game despite the loss. But Johnson never found his role as he battled injuries and played behind Brady Manek and Pete Nance.

The lack of playing time and his role is figured to be a big factor as to why he transferred out this season.
