Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Kyle Trask saved the best for last in the preseason. The rookie passer struggled with consistency in his first two outings, but he was very sharp in the final exhibition game against the Houston Texans on Saturday night.
Though the Texans are expected to have a tough year and Trask was mostly facing backups in the second half, it was a very positive sign for a player who the team likely views as a long-term project. He replaced Tom Brady to start the third quarter, and he finished the game 12-of-14 for 146 yards and a touchdown.
Trask’s first professional score came on a nice throw to tight end Codey McElroy, who was open on a seam route. Trask threw the ball with some pressure in his face, which was a recurring theme during Saturday’s game. Though he was sacked twice, Trask handled the pressure much better in this game than he did in the prior two contests.

He made some nice plays stepping up in the pocket, and he was also able to use his mobility to stay alive in the pocket. Questions about Trask’s accuracy and arm strength at the NFL level seem to have been overblown, as he looked very sharp slinging the ball around the field.
Trask shouldn’t need to see the field much this year (barring injury to Brady), so the Bucs can take all the time they need to get him acclimated. But the team hopes that Trask can eventually become the player that will replace Brady.
