Former North Carolina shortstop [autotag]Michael Russell[/autotag] has made waves on the professional scene, being named to the 2022 Atlantic league All-defensive team.
Russell was drafted in the 5th round by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2014. Since then, the Tar Heel had spent time in the minors splitting time at second and third base.
After five seasons in the Rays development farm playing with four different teams and spending a year on the disabled list, Russell was released by the Rays in 2019.
Since then, Russell has been a vital member of the High Point Rockers of the Atlantic League. This season he’s started 98 games, helping get the Rockers to a playoff berth. This season, Russell has played mistake-free with a fielding percentage of .975, earning his All-defensive team honors.
On Wednesday, Russell and the Rockers will be back in action at 6:35 P.M for game two of their Atlantic league championship series.
