Former Rutgers defensive back Keenan Reid on his New York Jets rookie camp experience: I was told to stay ready

Keenan Reid seemed to make an impression at New York Jets rookie minicamp.

For Keenan Reid, last weekend’s rookie minicamp with the New York Jets certainly left an impression. The feeling, the former Rutgers football defensive back said, is one that he thinks is mutual with the NFL team.

In talking about his time with the Jets last week as a rookie minicamp invitee, Reid said is grateful for the opportunity and hopes that there is another opportunity with the NFL in the not-too-distant future. Reid spent the last three seasons at Rutgers as a reserve defensive back. Prior to that, he played at Lincoln University, a Division II program that is a Historically Black College or University.

His path to the NFL is unconventional to say the least, especially since Reid was a reserve defensive back at Rutgers. He made just seven appearances at Rutgers but it was his strong showing at the Pro Day in March that helped catapult him to this opportunity with the Jets.

“My experience with the Jets was great, they are a great organization from top down and carry a great energy to them,” Reid told Rutgers Wire.

“I had a great time training (and) practicing with the team. I was already familiar with many of the staff and the building since I was invited to their local day but overall I did really well in practice and meetings.”

“I spoke to coaches since camp ended and they were impressed with me. At the conclusion of our conversation, I was told specifically to stay ready. I’m currently continuing to train and working with my agent to see what the best opportunity is for me, moving forward.”

At the Rutgers Pro Day in March, Reid was impressive. A 40-inch vertical opened some eyes as did very strong times in the 3-cone shuttle (7.15) and 4.21 time in the 20-yard shuttle.

But it was his straight-line speed that made the Jets take notice. His first run of the 40 saw Reid at a 4.5. Then he clocked in with a 4.41, the fastest of the day for any Rutgers athlete.

The feedback from the Jets about his three days at the team facility, Reid said, was positive.

“They were impressed with me. The coaches spoke about not only how smart I was (and) competed in meetings but were impressed with how I was able to take those meetings and techniques and went over straight to the field and executed it at a high level. The install was new for everyone so a big part of practice was being able to simply adapt quickly and fit into the new scheme,” Reid said.

“My coaches there joked with me during camp about my Pro Day numbers as well as talking about how well I did in my 40 and other drills.”
