Former Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson has been released by the Washington Football Team, per a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo.
After signing a two-year contract to stay in Washington prior to the 2019 season, Peterson finished the year with 898 yards and five touchdowns.
Peterson was previously seen as the team’s likely starter this season following the release of Derrius Guice, but that will not be the case. Peterson still intends to play this season with a new team as he continues his pursuit of a championship.
He told NFL Network last month, “Winning a championship is the one I want most.”

Peterson also remains in hot pursuit of Emmit Smith’s career rushing yards record. He needs 4,140 more yards to eclipse Smith’s mark of 18,355.
“That’s one of the goals I set to myself when I entered the NFL was to pass the GOAT,” he said. “I look forward to playing a couple more years, 3-4 more years, who knows, depending on how my body is feeling.”
Adrian Peterson’s release clears $2.4M of cap space for the WFT, & paves a clear path for rookie RB Antonio Gibson.
If this is the end of the road for AP, he finishes with $101M earned thru 14 seasons; $32M more than any RB in history.https://t.co/efNdogSFbG
